As part of our new weekly wine series, our resident wine expert and columnist Mary Dowey shares her weekly bottle for you to sip on over the weekend…
Mary’s bottle this week: L’Arpent des Vaudons Sauvignon Blanc, Touraine, Jean-François Mérieau 2013
If you’d asked me a few weeks ago which style of wine I was least likely to feature as the first recommendation in this new weekly slot, I might well have said Sauvignon Blanc. The Irish market has been awash with it for years, plenty of it tasting more like an exotic fruit salad than a wine.
And then along comes this Loire beauty, so crisp, precise and invigorating that it would be madness to pass it by. Made by an ambitious young producer, it has the same, flinty underpinning as a good Sancerre – at half the price. Delicious as an apéritif or with light first courses; a tomato salad (now that the season is upon us) or any dish featuring creamy goat’s cheese will be difficult to beat. On special offer from Terroirs, Donnybrook, Dublin 4, €14.95.
